6th Grade Class Descriptions
BALLET

Ballet, the basis of all dance, is taught at many levels throughout the week. This classical dance form uses grace, strength, and balance to create flowing movement. Students will work both at the barre and in the center while learning terminology and body placement. The technique a dancer learns from this class carries over to all dance forms. Dancers who take ballet may work up to joining our pre-pointe and pointe programs.

TAP

Our tap program explores rhythms and tap fundamentals with an emphasis on musicality. Dancers will learn tap terminology and tap steps, from the basic building blocks to more advanced rhythms.

JAZZ FUSION

Our jazz fusion program not only allows our dancers to explore jazz movements, such as kicks, turns and leaps but also focuses on flexibility and strength building. This is the foundation for styles such as commercial jazz and contemporary.  Dancers will learn choreography integrating more complex steps using current energetic music that the dancers will know and love.

CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary is a newer style of dance that formed as fusion of jazz, lyrical, and many other dance forms. As scene on “So You Think You Can Dance” and “World of Dance”, dancers often tell a story by using natural, spontaneous movement and personal interpretation. It is highly recommended that dancers have previous experience in jazz and/or ballet.

HIP HOP

This upbeat energetic class is taking the dance world by storm. Strength training is a vital component of this class in order to perform this athletic form of dance. Students will build a solid foundation of hip hop moves and combine them together to learn exciting choreography. Today’s current, age appropriate, top pop & hip hop music is used during this class.

MUSICAL THEATER

In our musical theater class, students can become a triple threat by singing, acting, and dancing. All three skills are visited weekly through a wide variety of lessons and games. Often literature and technology are integrated in order to provide the most enriching classroom possible. They have the exciting opportunity to participate in our annual musical.

TUMBLING

Our tumbling class focuses on the basic skills of balance, strength, and stretch. Students will move through a sequential curriculum that builds on a specific skill progression. We have tumbling classes available for the beginning student through the advanced. If your student has tumbled prior to joining us, our staff will place them in an approximate level for further evaluation. Our studio is a Tumbling Effect certified studio, and therefore, all teachers and assistants are trained in proper teaching and spotting techniques. Your child’s safety is our number one priority.

SILKS

Silks, or Aerial Arts, is a type of performance in which one or more artists perform aerial acrobatics while hanging from a fabric that is adhered to the ceiling. Students learn a wide variety of tricks in combination with working on the strength and flexibility needed to perform this exciting and demanding performance style.

POM & CHEER

In Pom & Cheer the students will learn multiple styles by combining strength training exercises, kicks, turns, leaps, jumps, and basic tumbling.  Cheer terminology will be introduced, and basic stunting will be visited. This is a performance team, and therefore, will have additional requirements and performance opportunities. For more info, see our performance team Quicklink.

ALL STARS

The Bender Performing Arts All-Stars are a performing group for students in grades 4-12. The program offers opportunities for dancers to perform in jazz, tap, contemporary and hip hop. To be a member of the BPA All-Stars, dancers must be enrolled in a BPA class in the dance style they want to participate in, and attend an All-Star performing group class. Students may choose which style of dance they would like to perform in and are not required to take all styles of dance.  The group participates in several community performances and competitions throughout the year. For more info, see our performance team Quicklink.

PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONS

We offer private instruction in piano and voice lessons. Thirty-minute lessons are held in the private studios upstairs. Instructors work with the student at any level, beginner to advanced.
