Explanation of Class Placement 2026/2027
As we prepare to register for our new season, we wanted to take a moment to explain how placement and levels work here at Bender Performing Arts. We want your child to thrive and being placed in the correct age/level class is key to their well-being.
How is my child placed for next year?
Every dance teacher carefully evaluates each student on the following criteria to determine if it is the appropriate time to move to the next level. Our instructors spend hours carefully evaluating each student and deciding what is best for them.
- Age – We believe that children and teenagers thrive when placed with peers similar to their age. Emotional maturity is an important part of child development and being placed in a class with kids who are much older or younger can hinder these skills.
- Technical ability – Each level has technical milestones that a student must reach before moving forward. Skipping levels or moving up before a student has mastered the technical skills of their current level sets them up for injury, frustration, and struggle.
How do the levels work?
Some of our classes have such an extensive curriculum that students need to take them for at least two years before mastering the technical skills they need to move forward. Taking a class for the second-year increases strength, technique, flexibility, rhythm and allows them to truly “master” skills instead of just keeping up. This process instills confidence and boosts self-esteem. Our instructors give students individual attention to help challenge them and create an engaging environment for everyone.
What if I feel my child has been placed in the incorrect level?
All students will need to enroll in the level they were recommended for. After taking the recommended class in the fall for at least 2 weeks, a parent may email our front desk at info@benderperformingarts.com to request an evaluation in a different level. Evaluations are at the teacher’s discretion, and we ask that you respect our instructors and their expertise and accept their decisions.
If you have any questions regarding levels, placement, class suggestions etc. please email Brittany Morse at bmorse@benderperformingarts.com.
